Here is a guest blog from my adorable friend Middony. She is one of the hottest go-go dancers around here and everyone loves her. A lot of you have been asking me what its like to go-go and I thought you might want to hear from someone who is in the center of all the action. Middony was sweet enough to take some time and write this for you all. Enjoy ♥
I'm Middony Roman I'm 19 & I'm a gogo dancer in Utah on the V2 Gogo team! When people ask what a gogo dancer is they usually say "oh, like a stripper?" & I roll my eyes & say "No, we keep our clothes on." Then they usually just stop asking about it when I say no, as if it's uninteresting or something.
I got interested in gogo dancing when I was at a show to see Ferry Corsten. I was so mesmerized by the dancers & wanted to know how they got into the job! So I started practicing & started going to more EDM shows & it was always the V2 gogos that caught my interest! They just brought so much energy to the stage!
So I said to myself I am gonna become a gogo no matter what! Then I saw there were some auditions for another team to dance at a show & that if we did really good we would be put onto the team. I didn't have anything to loose so I just went, not knowing anybody, I did a nervous dance & got the spot! After the show I was put on their team! But I still was determined to be on V2. People said it was not possible & would say "You have to be like a model to be on v2 everyone wants to be on their team." Little did people know that fueled my fire.
I started kinda talking to the V2 gogo's head dancer when I met her at a workshop she did for gogo dancing. I was so intimidated! I felt like such a noob!
Anyways, Christmas time came around & V2 had a little Christmas show. I told the head dancer I was gonna go & was excited to watch her & the team! She said come find me & I'll let you dance. I was so nervous, but I went & she waved & invited me to dance! I swear I was shaking! I didn't really do to well, so I kinda just sneaked out after I was on stage.
Legends, the NYE show came around & I wasn't planning on going. Little did I know that was gonna be the exact opposite! The head dancer invited me to fill in for one of her girls! I was gonna cry! I had butterflies for a week straight before the show! I couldn't believe that ME, out of all other girls striving for the same thing & same team was asked! I was then added to the V2 B team after that show!
I couldn't believe how the amazing things were coming to me! I wanted to run a mile yelling "BOO YAH! I did it!"
Valentines came & there was one spot for the A team. I thought I was just staying on B team so I didn't really get to nervous at the show. All the other girls were because they were all auditioning for B team & the last spot on A team. I kinda just did my own thing & let them do theirs. The next day I got a call & was told by Megan the head gogo, "guess what?" & I was like "yah?" she said " The girls & I agreed to add you to A team!" I said "Quit it! Me? What?!" she just laughed.
I've been rockin it with the V2 ladies for a year now & I've never been so blessed! I'm so grateful to have been given a chance to be on an amazing team, it's brought so many new experiences & friends & family to my life. It's my passion! I wouldn't give it up for all the money in the world. It is my world. (:
Now for all you people who don't really get what a gogo dancer is. Here's my definition. A gogo dancer is a dancer usually found at EDM events & clubs. They dance to top 40 music, hip hop & EDM. They are usually dancing on stage on both sides of the dj either on gogo boxes or speakers or just the stage. Gogo dancers have to be fit! They are eyecandy, but are still entertainers. Gogo dancers are NOT strippers. Strippers take their clothes off. Gogo dancers usually wear very layered bikinis & boots or fluffies, with tons of accessories, they stay clothed. The dancing is also very different, big arm movements are done almost theatrical, arm rolls, body rolls, tutting, & footwork is put in some girls on my team can bust out the moon walk in their 5 inch gogo boots! Please don't try & tell me strippers bust out doing the moonwalk in their heels while counting the beat & pumping up the crowd at the same time. Pretty sure that club would go out of business.
A lot of girls have asked me where I learned to dance. Watching. I watch a lot of music videos, watch the girls on my team, watch YouTube tutorials if I wanna learn a certain move. Then I practice, I practice it till I get it memorized then I put it into my style & flow with it. Then the new move becomes second nature! It gets frustrating but keep trying! Doing it in front of the mirror helps you see how it looks & it helps by watching yourself too.
Being a gogo isn't always easy. Sometimes you don't get to dance, you get people who call you names, make fun of you, or are just plain jealous so they are rude. But then you get the people who love you! & sometimes even know your name when you've never even met them before! You also get to dance & perform next to world renowned artists! It's such a rush, I feel like I'm in a another world sometimes.
Choosing outfits to wear isn't easy either! Layering & socks, boots, fluffies, gloves all has to look good & match! It's hard to figure out what to wear! Usually a bikini, studded belt, boots or fluffies is the norm. But put some creativity into it! There have been outfits I've worn that I wish I could wear every time I danced.
Finally, rememeber why you are a gogo dancer or why you wanna become one. Hopefully one of the reasons is because of the music! Know the music, how to count beats & how to tell between different genres. It's sad to see a gogo who is just dancing because she likes the attention & usually they look lost on stage, & bored. Connect with the crowd, smile, lose yourself in the music but most of all rock that stage!
